Sell Your SRECs
West Virginia producers of renewable energy can have their cake and eat it too. Not only do they get to use the electricity they produce, they can sell the equivalent value of the energy produced on the open market. Each SREC, or Solar Renewable Energy Credit is equivalent to 1 mW of energy you produced. States that have a Renewables portfolio standards (RPS) require that a certain percentage of a retail electricity supplier’s sales be derived from renewable resources. The electricity supplier can install renewable capacity, pay a fine, or pay other people who have produced renewable energy.
WV does not currently have a RPS, but residents are eligible to sell their SRECs into Ohio, PA and the District of Columbia. Recent auctions have put the value as high as 30 cents per kW. One easy hassle free way to sell is through SRECTrade. We use their EasyRec program, and can provide all the documents needed to participate. Of course you are free to investigate other sales opportunities.
