Be an Energy Pioneer
Would You be a Pioneer Today?
West Virginia was founded by men and women who wanted a better life for themselves and their children. They took a risk to do something different and it paid off. They had to step outside their comfort zone and try something new. They didn’t make excuses; they made do, and made it work. We have an opportunity to show that same pioneer spirit today and embrace a future based on energy efficiency, clean energy, and independence from foreign oil and the fossil fuels that put our economy, national security, and the environment at risk.
It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg to use energy wisely. Here are things you can do to make changes in your energy use that will benefit your pocketbook, and make the world a cleaner, greener place.
Conserving Energy
Conserving energy is the logical first step in planning your renewable energy system because every dollar you spend on conservation will save you $3 – $5 on your installation.

Efficient Transportation
In 2008 personal transportation consumed 16% of the energy Americans used. (All transportation was 28%.) Especially in the rural areas of Virginia and West Virginia there are few options besides using personal transportation, as there is no mass transit; but a few simple guidelines can improve your transportation carbon footprint and save you money.
Reduce Use
- Combine trips
- Carpool
- Live close to your work
- Use alternate transportation when available (bike, walk, mass transit)
- Drive the speed limit, and accelerate gently
Choose the Cleanest Vehicle

- Remember that an electric or hybrid vehicle is only as clean as the fuel powering your grid
- Biodiesel as transportation fuel offers many benefits
- Adapt a diesel vehicle to run on vegetable oil
Maintain Your Vehicle
- Keep tires inflated correctly
- Regularly service oil, fuel and air filters
